- The PROUD SYMBOL of THINGS SCOTTISH IN NEW MEXICO -
The New Mexico Tartan was conceived by fellow New Mexican Ralph L. Stevenson, Jr. “By interviewing a broad cross-section of individuals interested in preserving cultures and the project, Welsh, Irish, Manx & Galician ancestry, as well as, input by American Natives…the consulting with individuals was to prevent one association or society having influence over another” The New Mexico Tartan was officially recorded in 1996 with the Scottish Tartans Authority in Scotland and the office of the Secretary of State in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In April 1999, the State of New Mexico Tartan was finally recognized & accredited by the Council of the Scottish Tartans Society in Pitlochry, Scotland. The designer and registered owner, Mr. Stevenson, has placed the tartan in the public domain to be freely reproduced. Aye!
