The fabric has been an identity mark of many cultures, with colors and designs showing one's kinship or loyalty. For centuries, the Scots have dyed sheared wool and wove their own crisscross pattern to identify their clan and leader. The most powerful worldwide symbol of kinship is the clan tartan and the kilt, Scotland's distinctive national attire.
The State of New Mexico Tartan has arrived to be shared by all citizens, regardless of cultural or racial background. Unique from other districts, this tartan has been woven with the same color as the New Mexico State Flag. Blending its colors and woven sett, the legend of this tartan truly embraces the characteristics of the 47th State of the Union.
The State of New Mexico Tartan has been approved, recognized, and or endorsed by NM community and tribal leaders, veteran & law enforcement organizations, cities, the NM offices of the Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, other state tartan designers, and North American and international tartan associations.
